Course Contract Review #1

Course Contract Review #1
1. What am I doing well?

• Right now I believe that I am starting off well for class. I’m well rested; I have eaten breakfast and completed the given assignments. Right now I feel that I am on top of things. Checking the websites regularly and my planner to see what else I need to be doing.

2. What am I not doing well?

• I am studying the material and listening in class, but I need to use different strategies to help me remember the content. Material that I have listened to I understand, but anything I have found on my own I need to go in more depth on. In depth I mean using the memory builder for example.

3. Am I making sufficient progress on my goals?

• Goal number one I am progressing well. I am not procrastinating. I am keeping on top of the work and I don’t feel stressed. Even better my husband agrees with me as well.

• Goal number two I am doing ok. I am looking over notes and material, but I just need to do if differently to help install the information in my head. I did ok on the first exam but I want to know the information better on the next exam to better apply the content in my teaching.

4. List specific things you need to do to change your goals.

• I need to use the study strategies. Actually do the memory builders and create flashcards.

5. How is your motivation? Are you focusing on mastery or performance goals? Does anything need to change?

• My motivation is very high right now. I’m not experiencing distress but eustress!

• I though I was focused on mastering goals, but after this is I believe it was performance goals now. I want to focus back to mastery goals.

• I need to change on how I have always approached my classes. This information I am going to need to know and understand. I want to have mastery goals. Using the above suggested study skills will help me to accomplish the mastery goal of being able to apply the content from this class into my own classroom.

Educational Neuroscience - Dr. Judy Willis

Educational Neuroscience - Dr. Judy Willis
• What?

Dr. Judy Willis is currently researching on the Current Impact of Neuroscience on Teaching and Learning and Learning to Love Math. These two books will be published some time this year. Dr. Judy Willis studies how understanding and teaching our students differently will allow for student success. She studies and demonstrates “Brain Friendly Strategies you can use to Ignite Your Child’s Learning and Increase School Success, in another one of her publications How Your Child Learns Best.” Dr. Judy Willis is continually striving to find better alternatives to teaching rather than just teaching to tests and overloaded curriculum. Currently her man focus is on teachers and parents. She gives new teaching styles and ways to teach to both the student and your own child.

• So What?

Dr. Judy Willis’s research is heavily involved in education. Her main goal started when she was practicing as a neurologist and she was over whelmed with several children with the referrals of ADD, OCD, oppositional-defiant syndrome, and ect and more often than not none of these students had any of these conditions. Dr. Judy Willis new exactly why all these students were being sent in for behavior disorders. Teaching had changed. Teachers were only teaching to the test. Students were becoming unengaged in the classroom and then in return act out. Knowing this information and research will allow you to become a better teacher. If educators can take the time to incorporate hands on activities and creative thinking then students will become engaged again. In Psychology Today quoted from one of Dr. Willis’s book, “When education is not enriched by exploration, discovery, problem solving, and creative thinking, students are not truly engaged in their own learning.” Teachers need to model this into their teaching and success will be seen. I want to strive to be this type of teacher and I hope my children’s teaching will follow the RAD teaching.

• Now What?

Applying Dr. Judy Willis research into my classroom curriculum will allow for better understanding of my content. By using creative thinking, exploration, discovery, and problem solving then my students will better learn the concepts I have taught. If I show my students how to explore into the human body they will gain a better understanding and apply the knowledge into there lifestyle. Using continually different teaching styles will help keep them engaged. Using imaging and hands on will allow for new pathways to be formed and for better recovery of that knowledge latter on in life.

For example, I can show the You Tube video about teens texting and driving- Public Service Annoucement  and out comes that can happen. These images will be better installed when they go to text and drive the next time.

In addition I also enjoyed the advice to take a three minute break when switching gears in the lesson. This allows the students to better store the knowledge and take a little brain breather!

Motivation

Why are you here (in the teacher education program, in this class, at UVU)?
I am in the teaching education program because I want to make a difference. I want to shape young students lives. I want this next generation to be better informed and more educated than I ever was. I want students to be excited about their health and take care of it. Educational Psychology will help me do so by learning how to better teach and motivate my students.

What motivates you?
My personal motivation is what pushes me through life. As a child my parents always knew if I wanted something bad enough that I would do it. They never had to encourage me to do better. My goals are what direct me through life. Graduating and becoming a wonderful Health teacher is my motivation right now.

Why do you succeed? Why do you fail? (Use terminology from attribution theory)
In consideration to the incremental theory of intelligence I have had success in my life. I do not believe that I am naturally smart but I understand the need of hard work. Learning is up to me. My locus of control is internal. Blaming my husband, my teachers, or others will not change anything if I didn't put in the hard work to study for the test or the assignments. This is why I believe I have seen success in my life.
My failures would generally come from my ability and luck. My ability is not the strongest as others. Sometimes it's discouraging that I have to put so much effort into writing a paper, doing assignments, or studying for tests compared to someone that has to put in little effort to get an A. I also fall short when it comes to luck. Usually if I have to count on luck then most likely I don't do the best. I'm just not a lucky person.

Do the goals in your course contract reflect mastery goals or performance goals? What does this say about you?
My goals are both performance and mastery goals. My goals consist of staying on top of my assignments by not procrastinating and by continually studying material to do well on exams and to learn material.
Immediately my goals are performance because I want to do well in the class and intern I would receive a good grade. In long term effects my goals are mastery goals. I want to continually study the material so I understand the teaching concepts and can become a better teacher. Overall I believe setting both types of goals is beneficial. I do well under pressure and competition from other students and want to do well for my own personal goals and standards. My personal goals and standards will be life lasting.

How do you need to change your motivations and mindset for this class in order to become a great teacher?
My motivations and mindset needs to be changed in order to become a great teacher is to worry more about knowing the content than the grade. I have always been concerned with getting an A, but I don't always retain the knowledge and the content. I want to better understand the material than just for the test. I want to remember and apply the knowledge that I learned from this class when I am teaching my own students.

Goals, Preparation Plan & Study Stategies

My Class goals

1-Reduce stress by not procrastinating. Finish all assignments and readings at least the Wednesday before class. Keeping on track of my assignments will help me keep my cool around my house and keep it more peaceful for my husband.

2- Perform well on exams. After class every week review notes and readings the day after class to help install the concepts learned during the previous class period. By continually studying and reviewing this will allow me to do better on exams by not cramming. Continuously studying should also help me to retain the knowledge learned.

Study strategies

To start off:
Adequate sleep, at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and even more on Thursday nights.
Eat breakfast before class.
Get ready & be alert.
Arrive on time to class so no information or quizzes are missed.
Always take notes and stay off my cell phone.

Flashcards:
Create flashcards for specific class material for tests and review often.

Memory Builders
Memory builders are alternative ways to help remember material.

Motivated Interest
Listen carefully. Find something in a subject to stay interested in.

Questions
Ask questions during the lecture about anything I don't understand. Do more research to install information I don't understand.

Distributed Practice
Keep drilling over material. Practice will make perfect.

Understanding a Topic
If i do not understand a topic in the reading or in lecture I will do my own research in the textbook and the internet. After personal research I will discuss the topic with fellow classmates and peers. Talking with other students in class they will help to reinstall the learned information and might be able to teach the topic in a different way than Dr. Cox was able to. If I still am questioning after my personal research and peer discussion then I will contact Dr. Cox either during her office hours, over the phone, or online chat.

Conclusion

I will reach my goals in this class by not procrastinating on assignments, continuously study the class content, use study strategies (ie 8 hours of sleep, eat breakfast, flashcards, and memory builders), and take the proper steps to understand the class content.
